November 2007 Winter Safety Skills Class Showed How to Stay Warm, Dry, and Safe in Winter Recreation

The tragic results of an early winter storm last year show the importance of knowledge and preparation in winter recreation. A northern California mountain biker disappeared during the storm, two climbers died in Yosemite, and several people had to be rescued from the Sierra backcountry.

On Saturday, November 3, 2007, at the Eldorado National Forest Supervisor's Office, Downstairs Conference Room, 100 Forni Road, Placerville, the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol held a free workshop class from 9:00 to 4:00 showing how to plan and enjoy a safe adventure in the backcountry, whether it is as a skier or snowboarder, on snowshoes, in a snowmobile, or even just an afternoon of snow play with the kids. This class helped attendees learn how to stay warm, dry, safe, and have fun.

Advanced planning is critical for safe recreation, because you need enough clothing, food, and water to keep your party safe. You need to recognize the dangers hidden in the extreme changes of the mountain environment. To help that planning, several major topics were covered:

      • Clothing
      • Weather
      • Nutrition
      • Hypothermia
      • Group Dynamics
      • Packs & Equipment
      • Emergency Shelters
      • Avalanche Awareness

General Overview of Winter Safety Skills Training
