![]() Winter Safety Skills Training - Because of the increasing popularity of cross-country skiing and other winter recreation, the Ski Patrol teaches classes on winter safety in the mountains. The annual training includes:
Search and Rescue - The El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol is a resource for the Eldorado National Forest and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department assisting in winter or cold weather search and rescue operations. The patrol is usually called upon to travel into remote areas accessible only by skis, often times in bad weather. Over the years the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol has had several successful "finds", primarily of hikers stranded in the mountains in heavy snow storms. Other Services - Recent and continuing volunteer service by the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol includes marking and maintaining over 53 miles of cross country ski trails with "blue diamond" safety trail markers, staffing the Loon Lake Chalet and Carson Pass Information Center to provide assistance to winter recreation participants using those areas, constructing and/or maintaining public rental facilities: Robb's Hut, a mountaintop lookout; Van Vleck Bunkhouse, a cabin located near the Desolation Wilderness Area; and the Shadow Hut Project.
