Guide Star and Networkforgood.org A website called Guide Star has a list of non-profit organizations. Because EDNSP is now classified as a non-profit organization, we will be listed on this website along with information about EDNSP. Networkforgood.org is an internet site that will accept online credit card charitable contributions for non-profit organizations, including EDNSP. Thanks to Daniel Hansler for getting EDNSP on these websites!
Supporting Members Committee Daniel Hansler has been working hard to start the newest EDNSP committee, the Supporting Members Committee. Several members have signed up and are working towards developing the direction (purpose, goals and objectives, etc.) of this committee. If you are interested, please contact Daniel Hansler at 530-644-5956. Thanks Daniel for taking this on!
Appreciation Gift From Amador RD Sean McGuiness of the Amador Ranger District presented EDNSP with an outdoor double heater for all the work that EDNSP has contributed on the Amador Ranger District (Carson Pass and the Hwy 88 corridor). This heater will be of great value to those folks staffing the Cookie Stations on the Echo to Kirkwood Race.
Qualifying Ski Day It was a great day with wonderful snow conditions! We started at Echo Summit Snow Park and skied to Cookie 1 (on the Echo-to-Kirkwood Race Course), then out towards Sierra-at-Tahoe, and back to Echo Summit.
Loon Chalet Open House The 6th annual Loon Lake Chalet Open House was held on January 18 and 19. We finally had some great weather for this annual event, which helped to bring in a great turnout by the public. It was also a good turnout for EDNSP members who took advantage of the Full Moon that weekend, and got in some good night skiing/snowshoe.
El Dorado County Search and Rescue SAR-X The winter Search and Rescue Exercise was held during the same weekend as the Loon Chalet Open House, however there were several EDNSP members who participated in this event. EDNSP had 2 snow cats and a team on skis. There was a neat opportunity to work with a search dog team, and they got ample practice snow tracking to find the missing individuals.
New Member Ski Day There were two New Member Ski Days held since the last General Meeting. Both had great turnouts, giving the newer members an opportunity to meet other members and to learn more about EDNSP.
UPCOMING EVENTS AND TRAINING
Mountaineering Class Saturday, February 8. Meet at the Safeway parking lot in Pollock Pines at 7:30 am. The class will be an all day training in the field, and will be based out of the Loon Lake Chalet. Please bring 3 caribeners (1 pear shaped, locking caribener, and 2 regular caribeners), a prusik (approx. 6 ½ feet of .5mm rope), and a cordellete (approx. 18 feet of .7mm rope). This training will be all hands on, and will be a great opportunity to learn mountaineering skills, including making a harness, using anchors, ropes, and caribeners to rapel a sled on steep angles, etc. Members of all experience levels are invited to participate. For more information or to sign up, contact Jeff Holm at 530-622-2396.
Winter Overnight The date of the winter overnight has changed to March 1st and 2nd. Meet at the Safeway in Pollock Pines at 7:30 am on March 1st. The location of this training exercise is to be decided, and depends on snow conditions. Bring your Patrol Pack (what you would normally carry on a day out skiing). The winter overnight is designed to be a realistic experience of what could happen if you were out for the day skiing and got called on a Search and Rescue or got stuck out overnight for some other reason. The equipment list, which is provided in the EDNSP handbook will provide some basic guidelines for what you should carry in your Patrol Pack. On Saturday morning, there will be some training on snow shelters, etc. before heading out into the field for the overnight stay. Members will be paired up (beginners with experienced members), and will work as a team to build their shelter, start a fire, etc. It is a fun event and is definitely a confidence builder. It will also help you learn what equipment is useful or would have been useful that you need to add to your Patrol Pack, as well as items that you may want to leave behind. For more information and to sign up, please contact Mike Matus at 530-644-5903.
New Member Ski Day Saturday, March 8th. Meet at El Dorado Savings Bank in Pollock Pines at 8:00 am.
Echo to Kirkwood Race and Tour The next race committee meeting is Thursday, February 13th at Round Table Pizza in Placerville (off of Ray Lawyer Drive) at 7:00 pm. We need to get the word out and get more applications out there! Contact Walt Thompson for more information at 530-644-5373. Additional race meetings will be held March 11th and March 18th in Building C (where we hold the General Meetings) [map].
Also, Race positions are currently being assigned. If you are interested in a particular position on the E2K race, contact Monte Hendricks at 530-644-6891. And, if your name is on the roster and you cannot help out with the race, please let Monte know that as well.
The next General Meeting will occur on March 4th at 7:00 p.m. in Building C [map].
